Ahh Valentine's day. A lovely excuse to celebrate your love and buy 75% off candy the next day. Some of our favorite Valentine's traditions have quite the impact on the environment. Here are 5 easy switches you can make this Valentine's Day to make the holiday more sustainable.
Instead of bouquets...
Try an air purifying house plant or a low maintenance succulent or cactus.
If you do get a bouquet this year there are so many things you can do to repurpose them instead of throwing them away. Here are just a few, but Pinterest is brimming with ideas!
Instead of commercial chocolates...
Try these fair trade sustainable cocoa brands
Here are some great treats for the vegans out there!
Or skip the packaging and make your own with you sweetheart!
Instead of greeting cards...
Instead of a card that will either spend forever in a box or get thrown away (and let's face it, who likes to spend $5 on a greeting card?) Get them a small print from a local artist, make your own card out of reused materials, or print one of your favorite photos together and write a note on the back.
Instead of gift wrap...
Gift wrap can't be recycled and can be expensive to buy. Try using newspapers, paper bags from the grocery store, fabric, or a reusable tote. You can even have a pre-Valentine's day craft together and get a bunch of paper bags and paint your own designs together. Then when the gifts are wrapped you get to see the lovely artwork! Instead of diamonds...
There are lots of issues surrounding diamonds, from where they are mined, the environmental impact, and the labor involved. But lots of people out there want diamonds, so whats a girl to do? Here are some places to buy ethic engagements rings:
Or better yet, get your boo a vintage (read: reused) necklace or ring. You will love the hunt for just the right piece, and love knowing that you saved something so special from being discarded.
So there you have it, five easy to make changes for a more sustainable Valentine's Day. I hope you all have a great holiday and spread the love.
